A visit to Parliament House engages and challenges students while they learn about Australia’s representative democracy in the home of the federal Parliament. Canberra’s most popular attraction offers structured programs designed to meet the needs and interest of students of all ages and abilities.

Tour of Parliament

The Parliamentary Guide Service offers one hour tours to school groups, which can be used independently or combined with a PEO role play. These tours focus on the House of Representatives and Senate chambers but on non-sitting days can include other aspects of the building relating to art, history or architecture. Knowledgeable guides encourage students of all ages to explore the roles and functions of their Federal Parliament in the place where it actually happens.

Parliament House role-playParliamentary Education Office Role-Plays

The Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) runs one hour role-play programs that explores how the Parliament makes decisions and accounts for those decisions. PEO role-plays are facilitated by qualified and experienced educators and take place in a replicated parliamentary setting, complete with costumes and props. In role and acting as parliamentarians, students learn about the role and functions of the federal Parliament by considering issues of national importance.
